PROJECTS / CHIAROSCURO

Chiaroscuro.

Light defines forms. Shadow gives weight to space.

Following the study of the line, Chiaroscuro explores the presence and weight of shapes on the photographic plane.

Light moves across walls, corners and openings, creating thresholds between illuminated surfaces and areas of shadow. As its intensity and angle change, the same place offers different compositions: shapes expand, draw together, gain or lose prominence.

Framing seeks a balance between these changing presences. Spatial depth becomes a relationship of scale, contrast and visual weight; shadow enters the composition with a substance of its own. Photography becomes an exercise in attending to time, which can transform what seemed motionless.
