THE ARTIST
Giorgio
Di Maio.
Architect and photographer. Naples, 1963.
BACKGROUND AND VISION
The parts,
the whole.
My architectural training shapes the way I look: a line acquires value in relation to others; a part participates in the life of the whole. In Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic architecture and the Neo-Plasticism of Mondrian and van Doesburg, I encountered questions that would also accompany my photographic work.
I have been photographing and exhibiting since the 1990s. From early works, including Colonie di artisti, Frammenti and Ombre, through the landscapes of Basilicata and non è Napoli, I return to what is close at hand: details, quiet presences, traces of everyday life. The exploration of forms is intertwined with an attention to people and their condition.
THE JOURNEY
From intuition
to research.
Since 2013, photography has been at the centre of my work. Long walks in Milan and the study of visual language and philosophy gradually gave a name and a deeper awareness to The Hidden Harmony. Writing, including the column begun in 2016 in Osservatorio Digitale, accompanies and puts the experience of images to the test.
I seek relationships between lines, shapes and colours in reality: balances born from the presence of differences. Framing recognises and gathers them, offering the viewer an inner possibility of quiet. Peace is the horizon of this work, a search that continues across different places and projects.
I understand artistic work as a contribution to our shared life. The study and experience received from others become a task to pursue and pass on: taking part, through images, in a journey of human and spiritual growth.
